Named after the Ancient Greek city Sardis, Sardonyx is a special variety of Onyx containing bands of Carnelian. First documented in 1837 by J.D. Dana, the term “sard” was also used to refer to very dark colored Carnelian until modern times.

Sardonyx is also recognized as the birthstone for those born in August, alongside Peridot. Said to bring protection, strength, and willpower, Sardonyx has been used for centuries in jewelry, amulets, sculptures, plates and trinkets. Ancient Roman soldiers wore Sardonyx necklaces or rings with images of Mars, the God of War, to give them courage in battle. Throughout history, the Assyrians, the Indus civilization, and the Mycenaeans have used this precious stone as well. In the Bible, Sardonyx is described as a “precious stone in the foundation of the heavenly city."
